Bruno Nyberg was president of the ECA during the journey to Enoch. He was killed before the player awoke, following the events of the The Landing.

Bruno Nyberg was born to a Swedish father and Turkish mother. He entered the arena of politics at a young age, during a time when all that politicians could aspire to was delaying the collapse of human civilization. Nyberg stood out as one of the few optimistic figures able to give people a sense of hope and purpose. When he learned that the Ark Ship, the construction of which he had been charged with overseeing, could only carry half a million, it broke his heart. But it was a reality he had to face.

As first elected President of the Enoch Colonization Authority, Bruno Nyberg oversaw the S.M. Flores' successful journey from Earth to Enoch, and the establishment of the first human colony on the new planet. For Nyberg, however, heralding a new era for humankind was only the beginning of his work.

A true man of the people, he often walked the neighborhoods of the First City, without escort or bodyguards. He was an inspiration for many among the citizenry, to see their leader approach them unflinching, to have their concerns heard willingly, to have their problems acted upon immediately.

Sadly, the first Anomaly storm struck the closing bell of Nyberg's successes. Forced into an unbearable choice — whether to wake the 400,000 sleepers to a world not ready for them, or let them die in their sleep — he sided with young Shira Gutmann and cast the decisive vote to let them live. It could be argued that it was this humanitarian decision that led to the endless war. It could be argued this was the turning point for Bruno Nyberg, when the President of the ECA was finally forced to face the reality of this new world.

Scrambling to pick up the pieces, he lead the ECA's retreat to a more secure location in Rift Town, away from the violence and unrest that was exploding in the First City. Yet again, he had to abandon hundreds of thousands of people behind, to save even fewer. But this time, he did so without remorse. He realized that his efforts to save everyone could well lead to him saving no one.

As the first year of the insurgency grew into a war with endless casualties, Nyberg's stony demeanor and cold pragmatism was cemented. He spent his final months as a leader giving orders he once considered unthinkable. He wasted no resources on keeping Insurgent prisoners, and those few who were captured were quickly tortured to death. He treated his own people with zero tolerance, abandoning any pretense at due process, judicial or political. Doubters and critics were either subjected to execution for treason, or made to swear unquestioning allegiance to the ECA. Nyberg explored every possible avenue and used every weapon at his disposal, anything he could do to destroy his enemies across the battlefield.

Bruno Nyberg initially fought the efforts, led by Shira Gutmann, for a ceasefire with the Insurgents. But Gutmann was able to convince the President that the only way to put an end to this war was through diplomacy. When Nyberg finally agreed to a meeting with the Insurgents, it is said that for a brief moment, he was a different person. Someone else shone through him, perhaps the man he used to be, the optimistic, inspiring figure of a man that departed Earth with a dream.

Nyberg's legacy was concluded when, together with other top ranking officials in the ECA, he was brutally slain by the First Altered, who had entered Rift Town with the Insurgency's leadership under the ruse of peace talks. Shira Gutmann, one of the last remaining ranking officers, was forced to accept Nyberg's place as leader of the ECA. It was the last time peace talks would ever be attempted.
