During the early days of the colony, before the First City's unrest escalated into armed conflict, the ECA sent out expeditions across the valley with the goal of building settlements dedicated to the extraction of precious natural recourses. After the war broke out, some settlements abandoned any hope of a future within the ECA, and tried to maintain a neutral stance with the Insurgents.
Between the storms that ravaged the valley and the monsters that stalked them at night, some of those settlements were never heard of again. But there was one settlement that hung on, forgotten for years, located to the north of the First City on the banks of the lake. With rows of raised wooden homes standing beside a water source teeming with wildlife, the fishing village was known as Driftwater.
Eventually, as the Insurgents began to organize and consolidate their territories, they sent raiding parties beyond the First City. Though Driftwater was loyal to neither side, all the Insurgents saw were people who had abandoned the fight against the ECA, and were thus traitors to the cause. They slaughtered the villagers, each and every one, and Driftwater has been left abandoned ever since.
